Dr Dhurjati Majumdar completed his B. Sc and M Sc in Physiology with specialisation in Ergonomics and work physiology from University of Calcutta, Kolkata. His experience in understanding the Industry dynamics started with his Ph D thesis entitled ” Ergonomics, occupational health and safety in Jute industries in India”. He started his career working in Industrial and Management Engineering Programme at IIT, Kanpur. Subsequently he moved to the Central Labour Institute, Mumbai where he focussed on understanding the effects of various parameters such as heat, noise and ergonomic issues on the health, safety and performance of workers in industries across India.
He then joined the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences(DIPAS), DRDO, Min of Defence. Govt. of India, Delhi. At DIPAS, he conducted research on acclimatisation and the improvement of human performance in Antarctica, high altitude, desert and jungle environments. He initiated the research on Polar Medicine in India. He established the Ergonomics laboratory at DIPAS, Delhi with the state of the art facilities and carried out studies on physiology of exercise, biomechanics, cognition, design and standardisation of load carriage. He started the first 3D motion analysis laboratory in the country for experimenting on gait, kinematics, kinetics and EMG. He conducted several studies on the design of various military hardware and software by using ‘Human modelling and simulation’ facility in VR environment. His contribution to cognitive ergonomics e.g onscreen use of various types and sizes of fonts, character and background colour, arrows in searching task have been published in the peer reviewed international journals.
He has got wide experience of teaching and conducting trainings in the areas of Human physiology, Environmental physiology, Exercise physiology, Ergonomics and Human Factors in design and performance in several universities, IITs, NITs and other reputed academic institutes in India. He conducted a number of consultancy studies in textile, software development and automobile and agri-allied services. He has a keen interest in Yoga and it’s use in promoting workplace health.
Dr Majumdar was one of the plenary speakers at the 20th Congress of International Ergonomics Association, held in Florence in August, 2018. Watch him deliver his Plenary on Defence at IEA 2018.
